From Classroom to Cutting-Edge Innovation: Jeremie Darmawan's Precision Medicine Journey
11 March 2025
When Jeremie Theddy Darmawan first joined the MSc in Precision Health and Medicine (MScPHM) program, he had one goal in mind—to bridge the gap between bioinformatics and real-world healthcare applications. Jeremie is a MScPHM Scholar from Indonesia International Institute for Life-Sciences (i3L) with a specialisation in Bioinformatics and a strong foundation in computational biology. i3L, both an institute of higher learning and research institute, strives to accelerate Indonesia's competitiveness in the global landscape. Hence, Jeremie recognizes that in order to make a real impact in precision medicine, he needed hands-on experience in both academia and industry.

Making an Impact at MSD
The Ear OCT Imaging Biomarker Project is an innovative initiative aimed at developing non-invasive imaging biomarkers for studying ear infections using optical coherence tomography (OCT). This project has the potential to enhance early diagnosis and treatment, ultimately improving patient care.
At MSD, Jeremie quickly became an integral part of the research team, demonstrating exceptional technical expertise and problem-solving skills. He optimize the segmentation workflow, transitioned critical components from Matlab to Python, and played a pivotal role in AI-driven measurements of tympanic membrane thickness in 3D—a significant advancement in the project's image analytical pipeline.
His supervisor, Dr. Luo Weiwei, Principal Scientist, Biomarkers C Data Analytics, reached out to highlight his contributions to the MScPHM Directors to highlight his exceptional contributions. "Jeremie's ability to integrate into a fast-paced research environment and enhance our workflow so quickly has been outstanding," Dr. Luo shared. "His structured approach to quality control, algorithm development, and AI-driven analysis has been invaluable. His work is already being recognized by key colleagues in Singapore and the US."
For Jeremie, this capstone project has been both challenging and transformative.
Bridging Academia and Industry in Precision Medicine
Reflecting on his experience at MSD, Jeremie shared:
He also emphasized how the MScPHM program has helped him navigate the intersection of academic discovery and industry application:
A Future of Endless Possibilities
Although this is just the beginning of his capstone project, Jeremie has already demonstrated exceptional promise. Given his technical expertise, adaptability, and drive, he is expected to make further contributions by the end of his capstone and go on to secure a successful career in precision medicine.
As one of the inaugural MScPHM students, Jeremie's success showcases the program's ability to equip students with the skills and experiences needed to thrive in precision medicine.
